The Hesarra mushroom
Found in: Fallathia/The Veiled Wedge, Ivellea
Special effect: Boosts energy and stamina for a while, followed by lethargy and sleepiness

The Hesarra mushroom is well known across Kayre for its ability to invigorate anyone consuming it, providing a boost to energy and stamina. However, after its invigorating effects wear off, the consumer becomes lethargic and sleepy for a few hours. Many soldiers and fighters carry small pieces of Hesarra with them into battle, as they can provide the edge needed to win a battle. A single mushroom can provide enough boost to fight harder for a full hour.

When used in alchemy, the mushroom loses some of its potency - this is easily countered by adding more mushroom into the mix. It is commonly believed to be a possible ingredient in any potion, adding the mushroom's capabilities to the potion's other effects - some put it into emergency healing potions so the body will get the energy needed to recover from grievous wounds.

The Cevia mushroom
Found in: Fallathia/The Veiled Wedge, Ivellea
Special effect: Boosts the ability to sense, depending on application

As the Cevia mushroom's effects are considered rather useless in most alchemical products, it is not quite as widely known as the Hesarra mushroom. Its uses are considered extremely valuable in Ivellean cuisine, however, as it allows the cook to "cheat" by using dried and grinded Cevia mushroom as a spice. This is because of its curious effect of boosting the consumer's ability to taste.

A well kept secret, however, is that if one mixes in Cevia mushroom into certain salves and potions, it can boost another sense instead. The extremely expensive Tears of the Farseer, for example, uses powder from the Cevia mushroom to vastly boost eyesight, even if only temporarily - as only well-versed and widely travelled alchemists are even aware of the Cevia mushroom, the prices are raised substantially. Other, less savoury products, have also been made using the Cevia mushroom's unique capabilities.

Khaerite moonflower
Found in: Marshlands all over Khaerum
Special effect: Powerful preservative, but makes the consumer more emotional

Khaerum can be a beautiful country from time to time - when the winter frost has settled and the pale full moon shines down, for example. This is a rare sight, as Khaerum normally is clouded and covered in the darkness that its inhabitants are so fond of, but on those marshes lit up by the moon, the Khaerite moonflower grows. It is a coveted flower for a multitude of reasons; first and foremost, knights in Fort Rockden are only allowed to request their beloved's hand in marriage if they can present a Khaerite moonflower to their love. Second, it is a very hardy flower, its beauty taken into consideration. While it grows only in frozen marshland, it can survive nearly anywhere - as long as it gets the occasional beam of moonlight every now and then. Third, its hardiness lends itself well to potions that might not be used in a long while, making it a very good preservative. Fourth - it is a popular ingredient in love potions.

When a khaerite - and only khaerite - moonflower is ground into fine dust and used in potions, it looks almost like fairy dust, because of how it sparkles. Any potion created using the moonflower retains the sparkle, and as mentioned, it is a very good preservative. Potions created twenty years ago are still fine to drink, and some potions even become hereditary objects, passed down through the generations. Its side effect, and also its smell, tends to induce emotionality and a desire for tender moments even in the most stoic and stubborn warrior. Something so curiously regular as wild strawberry boosts this effect hundredfold, creating a powerful potion that - unlike many love potions - simply opens the consumer's heart up wide, metaphorically speaking. In such a state, it is easy for anyone wishing for a romantic relationship to have their way with the consumer. Thanks to the moonflower's other property, the effects linger for a very long time.

It is worth noting that if one were instead to use moonflower from the Grey Marshes, commonly known as the grey moonflower, in such a love potion, it has the undesired effect of physically opening the consumer's heart up wide. This always leads to the consumer's premature death as the heart fails to keep the blood flowing.

Ghost mushroom
Commonly found in dark caves underneath the Dimberg mountains
Special effect: Temporarily turns anyone consuming it invisible

The ghost mushroom, also called the thief's stool, is one of the most popular items among thieves and assassins in Kayre. By consuming it, they turn invisible for a limited time, making it possible for them to sneak around and do their business undisturbed, unless it is a very noisy thief, in which case any guard worth his salt will get suspicious. It's not known to have any side effects, either, so successively consuming it will allow one to remain invisible for extended periods of time.

Thanks to its properties, it has grown infamous among the guards in cities close to the Dimberg mountains, and therefore, guardsmen often pick out shady-looking individuals and go through all their possessions, confiscating any ghost mushroom they find. This has largely been successful at rooting out the less cunning attempts at importing it into Adrila and Ivellea, but the guards can't stop everything, so some ghost mushrooms are always in circulation on the black market.

When the mushroom is ground to dust and added to regular ink, it creates invisible ink, making it useful for secret messages as well. One can therefore easily figure out where the confiscated ghost mushroom goes.
